In considering updates to the Western Solar Plan, the BLM worked closely with the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory to examine forecasts for national clean energy needs and determined that approximately 700,000 acres of public lands would be needed to meet those goals.
The project is a large-scale solar energy initiative developed on 10,000 acres of land north of the city of London near Plumwood in Madison County. The project is expected to have a maximum generating capacity of up to 800 MW of clean electricity. It will also include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of up to 300 MW.
Dominion Energy, Inc. will develop the proposed Rocky Run Solar project on the southeastern side of Brunswick County, near Harris Crossroads, along its border with Greensville County, Virginia. The project site covers about 10,000 acres of land and will generate up to 300 MW of electricity to power 75,000 homes at peak output.
The project is expected to start construction in 2024 and enter commercial operation in the first quarter of 2025.
