China and Timor-Leste have enjoyed strong bilateral relations that date back to even before Timor-Leste’s independence. Historically, China supported the FRETILIN (Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor) government as early as 1975 and was one of the few countries to offer aid during East Timor’s struggle against Indonesian occupation.
