Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are increasingly opting for solid-state over lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, according to a new report from intellectual property company Appleyard Lees. Patent filings for Li-ion battery technology are plateauing while filings in solid-state innovation continue to rise rapidly, mostly driven by Japanese car and electronics
Murata Manufacturing is one of the top patent filers in solid-state batteries. The company has developed a new electrolyte for electric vehicles (EVs). The composite material, made of lithium salt
The majority of the energy that is filling batteries in every electric vehicle, solid state technology or not, is coming from burning fossil fuels—predominately how electricity is produced for the
Dominion Fredericks is an accomplished Research and Development Scientist specializing in lithium-ion battery technology. Since 2021, he has played a pivotal role at Dragonfly Energy in the development of
The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom situated in the Indian Ocean halfway between Tanzania and Indonesia, and directly south of the Maldives. The territory comprises the seven atolls of the Chagos Archipelago with over 1,000 individual islands – many very small – amounting to a total land area of 60 square
The Hype and Hopes Behind Solid-State Batteries. Xiaoxi He, research director of IDTechEx, a US-based consultancy, considers the commercial and technological outlook for solid-state batteries.. The rapid growth of the EV market has driven the development, manufacture and sales of batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, which have dominated the battery
Discover how scientists are unlocking chemistry limitations from traditional battery technologies and enabling solid-state batteries to break through the current energy density plateau; Learn and overcome battery failure, cell dimensional
Through this collaboration, the two companies, which lead the world in the fields including material development relating to all-solid-state batteries, seek to ensure the successful commercialization of all-solid-state batteries in 2031-28―as announced at the Toyota Technical Workshop in June 2023―followed by full-scale mass production.
Toyota said it will begin mass producing solid-state battery equipped vehicles by 2027, which will be the first Japanese vehicles with these batteries in the field. European and U.S. automotive OEMs are exploring different paths with solid-state batteries expecting to
On 3 October 2024, the UK and Mauritian governments announced they had reached an agreement on the sovereignty of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), also known as the Chagos Archipelago. Negotiations began in November 2022 under the government of Rishi Sunak.. This briefing focuses on the October 2024 agreement between the UK and Mauritius,
On Thursday 3 October, my right honourable and learned friend the Prime Minister and Mauritian Prime Minister Jugnauth made an historic announcement: after two years of negotiations and decades of disagreement, the United Kingdom and Mauritius have reached a political agreement on the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The treaty is neither
Researchers at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a new "solid-state" battery that can charge in the time it takes to fill up a petrol tank, and endure 3–6 times more charge cycles than

The solid-state battery race has solely focused on the EV market from the very beginning, but that''s not where the participation is here. This is clearly not an ideal Li-ion solution for an electric vehicle, but it is the solid-state battery that solves grid storage and ultimately dovetails with onset of electric vehicles to migrate our
Global Solid-state Battery Market Forecast. Global market for solid-state batteries slated to reach the revenue of approximately US$1.7 Bn by the end of 2030; Market valuation all set to experience staggering expansion at a CAGR of
SK On said the new solid electrolyte may be used in current nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) solid-state battery cathodes as well as in next-generation batteries such as lithium-sulphur batteries and
A highly promising approach to making smaller, lighter, significantly more powerful, and safer batteries is to use solid-state cells with anodes made of metallic lithium instead of graphite. In contrast to conventional lithium-ion batteries, which have liquid organic electrolytes and use a polymer film to separate the anodic and cathodic
Overall, solid-state batteries have the potential to revolutionise the battery industry by offering improved performance, safety and longevity compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Harvard researchers have made a solid-state battery that charges in ten minutes and lasts for 30 years, but the much-hyped technology remains a long-horizon solution for the energy transition.
Researchers at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a new “ solid-state ” battery that can charge in the time it takes to fill up a petrol tank, and endure 3–6 times more charge cycles than the typical EV battery.

“The current challenge of solid-state batteries is implementation and scale-up, rather than getting something even better at the cell level,” says Lombardo.
From an engineering perspective, a challenge that the industry has yet to overcome is manufacturing a solid-state battery pack that is able to endure extremely high pressure while also being able to “breathe” – expand and contract.
