The Republic of Senegal is making progress to expand its renewable energy sector under the World Bank Scaling Solar Program. As it stands, 70.4% of the Senegalese population has access to electricity, of which
In total, the entire Solana network — with 1,196 validator nodes and an estimated 20,000,000 transactions — uses an estimated 3,186,000 kWh per year. This is the equivalent of the average electricity usage of 986 American households.. Even with this low energy consumption, the Solana Foundation vows to even further reduce the Solana ecosystem''s environmental impact.
Monday, September 19, 2022 Solana''s Energy Use Report: September 2022. Overall network emissions increased while emissions per validator decreased, reflecting new measurements of e-waste, improved methodology, and validator network growth.

The Solana network, a high-performance, low-impact blockchain, is designed to scale effectively for global adoption. In a March 2022 review of the Solana network''s energy impact, the Solana Foundation reports that average per-validator emissions shrank, while the overall network and its total emissions grew by 1.5 percent.
Each Solana validator uses about the same amount of energy as a mid range web server. There are about 570 or so validators at the moment. Honestly the amount of energy being used by Solana is so miniscule compared to a Proof of Work blockchain like Bitcoin and Ethereum that it''s almost not worth talking about.
The project estimates that more than 400 jobs in the towns benefit from the existence of the new solar power plants in Senegal. Because Senegal mainly relies on imported oil for electricity, solar power plants offer a more reliable and sustainable green energy source that costs less.
The paired solar power plants cost $40.77 million, providing electricity to 540,000 people at under four cents per kWh – not only the cheapest energy in Senegal but among the most cost-effective across sub-Saharan Africa.
As it stands, Senegal has 112 MW of installed solar, however this figure is rising exponentially year on year as investment swings in favor of green energy development and policymakers under H.E. Macky Sall’s regime and others realize the benefits of the renewable source.
The plant, which is located 40 km south of the capital of Dakar in the department of M’bour, will supply 33,000 Senegalese households, saving Senegal’s national electricity company SENELEC an estimated $2.77 million per annum in fuel costs for thermal power plants over its 25-year lifespan.
The two plants that launched operations last month are located in Kael and Kahone in Western Senegal and have a total capacity of 60MWac.
The competitive tendering was led by Senegal’s Energy Regulatory Commission (CRSE). Although the proportion of Senegalese people with access to electricity has increased sharply over the past 30 years, nearly a quarter of the population still lacks access.
