From pv magazine 10/24 Pakistan is awash with solar panels. In August 2024, BloombergNEF revealed Pakistan had imported 13 GW of Chinese modules in the first six months of the year. One project developer told pv magazine that there is so much oversupply, modules are “lying on the road.”
Distributors like Innovo couldn’t import solar modules for around nine months. Some modules did enter the country despite import restrictions. Importing goods in Pakistan normally requires a letter of credit (LC), a type of assurance for foreign transactions issued by the importer’s bank.
(Bloomberg) -- There’s a shiny new addition to Pakistan’s dusty agricultural heartland: rows upon rows of solar panels. Imports of solar equipment from China in the first nine months are well ahead of those for the whole of 2023, according to data compiled by BloombergNEF.
Solar panel exports from China to Saudi Arabia grew more than sixfold from a low base in 2022 (0.4 GW) to reach 2.8 GW in the first half of 2023, driven by large-scale projects. Module exports from China over the last 12 months now stand at 3.6 GW, and would generate 2% of Saudi Arabia’s annual electricity demand.
But the mass adoption of solar panels also risked making the power provided by the Pakistani grid “unaffordable”, Awais Leghari, the energy minister, told the Financial Times. “Demand is shrinking off the grid. That’s a big concern for us.”
