In recent decades, Benin has experienced several energy crises that have forced it to import more electricity from neighboring countries like Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Nigeria, via the West African Power Pool (WAPP), to meet demand for its population. The worst crisis occurred from 2007 to 2013.
However, no empirical studies were found in literature on studies of the Republic of Benin's energy situation, and so more research and studies focusing on Benin are needed. Table 1. Summary of literature on the subject. 3. Benin's energy situation 3.1. Energy consumption
With population growth, energy dependence also grows. Approximately 75% of the population in Benin had access to drinking water in 2017, and 81.2% of this was concentrated in urban areas, relative to 72.2% in rural areas.
According to a study by Ref. , Benin has considerable hydroelectric potential for developing large, medium, small, and micro-hydroelectric plants in the Bétérou and Olougbé regions, for example, with estimated generation capacities at 70 GWh and 72 GWh, respectively.
Electricity production using biomass in Benin was zero, similar to other WAEMU member countries, except for the Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, which accounted for 53.4% and 46.6% of all electricity production (114.5 GWh), using biomass in 2018, respectively.
Benin is an agricultural country with rudimentary means of production. Despite the deplorable state of its agricultural development, this sector is still the main exporting sector in Benin. This confirms that Benin has considerable agricultural and domestic waste potential for energy use .
