With a low per capita electricity consumption, rapid economic growth stimulating a rapid increase in electricity demand and shortages of gas for power generation, the Bangladesh government is looking to domestic and imported coal to fuel a significant proportion of its ambitious power generation expansion plans.
Bangladesh consumes 2,099,900 short tons (st) of coal per year as of the year 2016 and ranks 60th in the world. As of 2011, coal supplied only 2.5% of the electricity generated with gas accounting for almost 80%.
The country produces 1 million tonnes per year. The U.S. Geological Survey states that the country has "small reserves of coal, natural gas, and petroleum." In 2021, the Bangladesh Energy and Mineral Resources Division reported 288 million tonnes of "proved" reserves in the Phulbari basin and 114.32 million tonnes in the Barapukuria basin.
The majority of natural gas in Bangladesh is supplied by the state-owned Petro-Bangla (about 99.4%). The remaining 0.5-0.6% is supplied by international oil companies. A mere 6% of the entire population has access to natural gas, primarily in urban areas. Electricity supply is not reliable and peak demand cannot be met.
In Bangladesh, despite the fact that the energy sector uses and covers varied products including electricity, petroleum products, natural gas, coal, biomass and solar, electricity is the most commonly used form of energy in the country. The policy and decision makers are mostly pre-occupied with electricity.
