Foreign help is not enough to fix energy issues, domestic reform is necessary. This past July, Iraq and France’s TotalEnergies finalized the Gas Growth Integrated Project, a $27 billion energy deal aimed at Iraq’s natural resources and improving the country’s electricity supply.
Now, two decades after the 2003 US invasion, Iraq has failed to see improvements in the electricity infrastructure. Although the disparity between supply and demand is widening due to population increase and rising temperatures, corruption remains the largest obstacle to a reliable electricity grid.
In 2022, Iraq was the second-largest source of gas flaring worldwide, second only to Russia. The TotalEnergies deal aims to help Iraq harness the natural gas emitted by its oil wells, achieve a more balanced energy portfolio, and address some of its domestic electricity shortages.
However, investing in a transition to solar energy is another crucial part of a holistic strategy that will contribute to Iraq’s economic development, stability, and reduction of environmental pollution. This paper explores how the country can harness the potential of the emerging renewable energy industry and amplify Iraq’s transition efforts.
As a major producer, Iraq’s electricity sector is almost entirely dependent on fossil fuels, which account for more than 80% of power generation. Despite its vast energy resources, the performance of the country’s power sector is sub-optimal.
However, the path to energy sufficiency remains a considerable challenge for Iraq even with regional aid. Without domestic reforms to address the underlying causes of the energy crisis, Iraq’s journey towards achieving energy self-sufficiency is still a considerable distance away.
