All the bidding projects from Germany’s latest innovative auction were a combination of solar with energy storage. Image: Convergent Energy + Power. Germany’s latest innovation auction has awarded contracts to 32 solar-plus-storage projects with a cumulative capacity of 408MW.
As many as 21 winning bids for a total of 175 MW represent projects for solar installations along motorways and railways. In the previous round of the innovation auction, the Federal Network Agency aimed to allocate 400 MW but received only three bids with a combined capacity of 84 MW.
Launched in 2020, the innovation tender seeks to combine several renewable resources, however as shown in the latest auction all bids submitted have been for the combination of solar PV with energy storage.
The October 2023 iteration of the innovation auction was oversubscribed and awarded 408MW of solar-plus-storage capacity. At the same time, the government announced the results of its latest onshore wind auction, where over 2.3GW of capacity was awarded, which it said “set a new record”. “In the innovation tenders, projects for hydrogen production, local heat production from renewable electricity or other regional flexibilities could be supported.” As has been the case in previous auctions, solar PV tenders (this time for 257 MW) were highly oversubscribed (163 bids with a total of 675 MW).
