Officials gathered in Southern Nevada on Tuesday to highlight significant progress in meeting federal goals for clean energy.
The Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy said Thursday their records show there are 35 operational solar plants in Nevada with a total capacity of 3,721 megawatts (MW). That includes smaller plants with less than 100MW capacity.
The solar power generated at the MGM Resorts Mega Solar Array feeds directly into the local southern Nevada grid and 100% of it is scheduled exclusively for use by MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas. This coincides with MGM Resorts’ decision in 2016 to transition from fully bundled to distribution-only service with the local utility, NV Energy.
The MGM Resorts Mega Solar Array has further potential to produce up to 100% of the daytime energy needs for its Las Vegas properties, spanning 65 million square feet of building space and more than 36,000 hotel rooms.
The power generated also cost NV Energy about $135 per megawatt-hour, compared with less than $30 per MWh available from a new Nevada photovoltaic solar farm. [ 40 ][ 16 ] But to compare fairly, it must be taken into account that the Tonopah solar project power is dispatchable whilst photovoltaic power is intermittent.
